Minor rescued, 61-year-old kidnapper held

A 14-year-old girl kidnapped from the New Delhi railway station on 13 June has been rescued from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. And the 61-year-old kidnapper has also been arrested. The accused apparently kidnapped the girl in order to use her as street beggar and earn money, the police said.

The accused, identified as Praveen alias Subhash, who hails from Ghaziabad, was arrested from his hometown and the girl was rescued from the accused’s relative’s place, said Sanjay Bhatia, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police [crime and railways].

The close-circuit television [CCTV] footage collected from the railway station’s waiting room made it possible for the police to identify the accused, Bhatia said.

During interrogation, Praveen informed the police that he beg for money at various railway stations in Delhi using the ruse of having been pick pocketed at the station and that he has no money to back to his native place, a police officer said.

The accused said that he used to earn money thanks to the cooked up stories ‘but not enough’.

‘So to get more sympathy and money from passersby, the accused thought that if he would have a minor girl along with him, people would give him more money,’ said Bhatia.

On 13 June, when the accused spotted a woman and her minor daughter at the New Delhi railway station, asking for information about train to Panipat in Haryana, he decided to take advantage of the situation. He pretended to help the woman who had come from Jalandhar and kidnapped her daughter.

‘He asked the victim to stay at the waiting room and then took her mother to the ticket counter. He returned and told the victim that his cell phone was running short of battery and needed charging. On which, the victim said she too needed to set it on charge. On pretext of that, he took her along and at a shop in the railway station, found electric sockets where he plugged both the phones and asked her to look after both the phones,’ said the officer.

Praveen told police that he took the girl to Ghaziabad and kept her confined for a few days. However, when he was unable to convince the victim, he dumped her in his relative’s place and left.

Meanwhile, the Delhi police team located the girl. The girl had approached the local police in Ghaziabad as well. She was rescued and handed over to her parents.
