A class V student was allegedly raped and murdered at Rambhadrapur Village in Birbhum in the wee hours on Friday. Police said that the girl was kidnapped from her house at around 1 am and the miscreants took her to a jungle near her residence.
They allegedly raped her and dumped her body in the jungle. Tension broke out when the body was found on Friday morning. Police came to know after speaking to the family members of the victim that she was sleeping with her grandmother in a room of the thatched roof house.
A police officer said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had broken open the door silently and stole the girl. They covered her mouth with pieces of clothes, as a result of which she couldn’t cry for help.
Her grandmother woke up at around 1.30 am and found that the girl was not on the bed. She initially thought that the victim had gone out to toilet. But her suspicion grew when the girl didn’t return even after 10 to 15 minutes.
She then went out to search for her. She had also informed the victim’s mother and father who were in the adjacent room.
Everyone, including the local people initiated a search for the girl. But they didn’t find her.
A villager saw the body of the girl inside the jungle and informed everyone. Everyone rushed to the spot and her mother identified the body.
The situation turned worse when the police reached the spot. Local people started staging a demonstration and restricted the police from taking away the body. They demanded immediate arrest of the accused.
Later a huge contingent of police was sent to the spot and the situation was brought under control.
Some empty bottles of alcohol were found from the spot.
Mamata Banerjee has ordered a CID probe into the incident and a contingent of CID officers are already on their way to the victim’s house.
The police are waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain the exact reason behind the girl’s death.
The investigating officers have asked the victim’s father whether he has rivalry with anyone or if they suspect anyone who could be behind the crime.
Police have questioned some people from the village but yet to arrest anyone in this connection.
