Minor girl among three killed in two separate accidents

Three persons including a 10-year-old girl were killed in two separate accidents in Nadia and Birbhum on Tuesday.

Police said the class V student Tina Khatun was run over by a private bus when she was heading to her school on Tuesday morning along with her mother. The incident took place at Chapra Elem Nagar near Krishnagar in Nadia.

Sarajit Koley, a local resident who witnessed the incident, said driver of the speeding bus failed to control the vehicle and hit the girl when she was crossing the road with her mother. The girl’s mother fell aside and received minor injuries.

“It seems that the victim was crossing the road as some of her friends were standing across the road. The driver failed to stop the bus when he suddenly found the girl in middle of the road and the accident took place,” Koley said.

Local people put up a road block following the incident protesting against repeated accidents in the area. They demanded posting of policemen on the stretch where reckless driving leads to accident on every alternate days.

The road block led to massive traffic congestion in the area. Policemen from local police station had failed to convince the people to withdraw the agitation. Finally, the road was cleared after senior police officers intervened and assured necessary steps to check accidents in the area.

Two youth were killed and one was left injured in another road accident at Rampurhat in Suri in which a heavy truck hit the victims’ motorbike from behind.

Three youth were travelling on the motorbike and the accident took place at Kantagaria Crossing while they were heading towards Suri.

Police came to know that the speeding truck had failed to control the vehicle and hit the motorbike. Two youth – Mithu Seikh (25) and his friend Milton Sheikh – were killed at the spot while Abdul Majid, who is a resident of Ayash Village in Rampurhat, was admitted to Lohapur Hospital. Later he was shifted to Rampurhat Hospital. Mithu was a resident of Ayash Village and Milton was a resident of Nagar Sherpur in Murshidabad. The accident led to massive traffic congestion on the road.
