Minor crushes 7-year-old to death during joyride

A 14-year-old boy mowed down a seven-year-old girl, while he was driving his friend’s uncle’s Alto car in south-east Delhi’s Jaitpur area on Wednesday night. The juvenile had taken the car for a ride. His friend was also with him when the incident took place.

Seven-year-old Riya died in the accident, while two other girls, Himanshi and Meenu, suffered injuries. Riya is the daughter of a cameraperson in a news channel and was returning after her tuition classes when the incident took place.

The juvenile was trying to drive the vehicle and applied the back gear, but could not control the speed and the car rammed into the three girls, who were walking behind the car. The force of collision was so strong that the three of them got sandwiched between the car and the wall of a house at the back side, said a senior police officer.

The incident took place around 6 pm on Wednesday in Saurav Vihar area of Jaitpur. The juvenile claimed he was learning how to drive.

After the incident was reported, a complaint against the juvenile was lodged. On Thursday, he was produced before the Child Welfare Committee [CWC], Lajpat Nagar and later handed over to his father, who is a carpenter.

A fine of Rs 1,000 has been imposed on the car owner under the Motor Vehicle Act 4/181, added the official.

Riya, who lost her life in the incident, was a resident of Saurav Vihar. She stayed with her father Jai Prakash, her mother and her nine-year-old sister. She was a student of Class I in Kalindi Public School.
