Militias Must Follow State: Iraq Premier-Designate

Iraq’s prime minister-designate has called on the country’s numerous militias and tribes to come under government control and stop acting independent of the government.

At his first press conference since accepting the nomination to be Iraq’s next prime minister, Haider al-Abadi said on Monday that the phenomena of militias roaming the streets alone ‘worries me and I consider it very dangerous.’

A number of Shiite militias answered a call by outgoing Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to support the Iraqi military, after large divisions fled from Islamic State militants near Mosul in June. A number of Sunni tribes have also turned on the militant group. Al-Abadi, who has until Sept. 10 to form a new government, said he is optimistic he will make that deadline.
