Midnight scare: Firing in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar, no one injured

It seems the Capital needs to get used to some postmidnight panic from now on. On the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday, unidentified persons inside an SUV carried out random firing outside a bungalow in Vasant Vihar area, home to several Israelis, some of them working with Israel Embassy. No one has been injured and it appears that the miscreants wanted to create panic in the area.

The incident took place at about 1.45 am, outside a house opposite Delhi Public School in Vasant Vihar. A private security guard, who was on duty outside the school, saw anonymous persons opening fire from inside a Toyota Innova, and then immediately fleeing the spot. The guard later informed the local police of the incident who reached the crime site. Police have recovered two empty bullets casings (plastic bullets) from the spot that were apparently fired from a handgun, usually used in athletic games to start a race or sport. The guard told the cops that the armed assailants opened fire targeting the house where several Israeli nationals, including some working with the Israeli high commission, reside. ‘No Israeli national or any other person hailing from other countries were injured in the firing spree,’ the spokesperson of Israeli Embassy said.

According to sources in Delhi police, preliminary investigation suggests that the motive of the assailants was not to harm any one. They wanted to create panic in the area, the police official said.  After the incident, some officials of the Israel Embassy visited the spot. On Sunday afternoon, the officials demanded sufficient security for their nationals.

‘CCTV footages installed near the area and at the main gate of the school are being looked at to find out the registration number of the car used in the crime scene. The guard who witnessed the act was not able to note down the registration number,’ the cops added.

Meanwhile, a case under Section 336 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Vasant Vihar police station, the officer said, adding that investigation is on to identifying the miscreants.
