Mid-day mayhem: Staff falls ill after tasting meal

The principal, a servant and a teacher of a civic school in Rohini  were admitted to hospital when they fell ill after tasting a mid-day meal cooked for students.
‘The incident took place at a government primary school in Rohini, Sector 21 around 5.30 pm on Monday. The principal Usha Mehta, a lady teacher, who was in-charge of the mid-day meals, and a maid, who was responsible for distributing the food to students, started vomiting after tasting the food and complained of stomach ache,’ a senior official said.

They were rushed to Brahm Shakti Hospital and were discharged soon after.
‘The authorities did not serve the food to students following the incident,’ the official added.
However, the three were rushed to the hospital again after their faces started swelling on Tuesday morning. They were referred to Max Hospital this time.
All three are reported to be stable now.
‘The food samples comprising of halwa and chana were right away sent to Shri Ram Laboratory for testing. The report for the same is awaited,’ the official added.

‘The mid-day meal provided to our school comes from Maitri Research and Development Foundation. What led to the swelling of the face is an issue of concern. May be some sort of conspiracy is behind this incident. Tests will check the quality of the food,’
Balram Mathur, principal in the morning shift of the school, said.

‘According to the rules of the school, before serving mid-day meals to students, the principal and a
teacher taste it. After proper verification, the food is served to the students. Luckily, the food was not served to the school kids,’ Mathur added.
Maitri Research and Development Foundation supplies mid-day meals in 56 other municipal schools in Rohini and Paharganj Zones. No such complaint has been received from these schools so far.
