Metro Watch: Metro station-cum-lovers’ paradise

As parks in Karkardooma seem to be the first place the families go looking for, if they want to catch their kith and kin in flagarante, the local Romeos and Juliets seem to have moved on to the parking lot of the Karkardooma Metro station. For just Rs 100, they are ensured of privacy that doesn’t exist in parks.

At Karkardooma, the security guards allow couples to spend some alone time for Rs 100.

Sources told Millennium Post that the couples in the locality have been paying the security guards Rs 100 to allow them to sit inside their car in the parking area. The ‘fee’ pays for screening of unwanted visitors until they are done with their love session.

‘This is the scenario not just in the outside parking lot, but also underground, which usually is not crowded,’ the sources said. Sources also said that these activities pick up during the weekend as a lot of cars are parked in the parking lot, which give the couples an extra benefit of not getting caught.

The Karkardooma Metro station building is one of the largest and it became functional in January 2010. It’s located on blue line connecting Anand Vihar to Dwarka. About 125 cars and 200 two-wheelers are parked here at one go.

What attracts couples to this Metro station is the presence of a market inside the station’s premises. ‘We often see empty alcohol bottles strewn all over the parking premises and couples enjoy themselves without any hindrance. We feel ashamed sometimes, but what can we do as the police is aware of the situation and guards are involved,’ an employee who works at one of the food stalls said. ‘The parking slot turns ‘cozy’ after 8 pm,’ the sources added.

When Millennium Post reached the parking area in the evening, we found many cars parked with groups of people drinking and smoking inside their cars. ‘I find the parking premises the best option to spend some time with my friends. If I park my car on the street then cops turn up and if I indulge in an argument then he would ask for car papers and the conflict would carry on. So it is better to use the parking area where there is no restriction on anything,’ said Ritesh (name changed) to Millennium Post.

When contacted, the parking guard said he was helpless. Millennium Post contacted Anuj Dayal, the spokesperson of Delhi Metro as well. ‘I am not aware of any such activities in the parking premises,’ he said categorically.
