Metro services disrupted as man commits suicide at Sovabazar station

Police said that the victim was aged between 50-55 but his identity is yet to be ascertained by the police. The victim who was standing at the platform suddenly threw himself in front of a running train on the Up line. The victim was crushed under the speeding train heading from Dum Dum to Kavi Subhash station. 

According to the Metro railway sources that the train’s driver applied the emergency brake, but he could not save the man and the speeding train ran over the man’s body. The victim died at the spot.
As a result of the suicide, Metro services between Dum Dum and Maidan stations remained disrupted for an hour from 11.15 pm to 12.15 pm. A truncated service, however, ran between Maidan and Kavi Subhash station during the period. Services resumed again after the personnel of the Railway Protection Force and police removed the body from the track. The disruption caused severe inconvenience to passengers. Passengers intending to travel from North to South were greatly inconvenienced.

The passengers were greatly inconvenienced as the incident occurred at the peak hour. People had to travel by suburban trains and by bus to their work places that took extra hours. Many of the commuters intending to go to Dum Dum station were stranded in various platforms as a result of the incident.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the middle aged person had been suffering from depression. Eyewitnesses have told the police that the victim was aimlessly walking on the platform for a while but when the train was entering the platform he jumped on the railway track. The driver’s attempt to apply emergency brake turned futile as his life could not be saved.
