Mercedes Benz launches B-Class Sports Tourer

Mercedes-Benz launched on Tuesday its two – and India’s first - B-Class ‘Sports Tourers’ in Mumbai, that combines the versatility of a MUV, ride quality of a sedan and dynamic performance of an SUV. Debashis Mitra, director (Sales and Marketing), announced the B-Class as a runaway success with over 75,000 units sold within first few months of its launch abroad, besides all 250 of these being sold out in India itself with delivery scheduled within the next few days.

Describing the B-Class a path-breaking product, he said it is the first of Mercedes-Benz’s premium compact cars that incorporate extremely sporty design coupled with 7G-DCT, dual clutch transmission with paddle shift that is normally found in high end sports cars like the SLS AMG. The core Mercedes-Benz values of safety and reliability have been taken to new levels with the car having seven airbags including a knee airbag – a first for any car in this segment. Other features include attention assist and tyre pressure loss warning indicator – making it one of the safest Sports Tourer available anywhere in the world, he said.

Highlighting the price of the two cars as Rs 21.49 lakhs for the B180 and Rs 24.87 for the B180 sport, he said Mercedes-Benz is the first to bring luxury SUVs to India and the focus - in the B-Class journey – is on the sports touring segment of customers who enjoy adventure sport, as it easily can carry a cycle, tent, 20 footballs and even a surfboard.

Asked whether a diesel model would be introduced in this segment, he said the B-Class Sports Tourer is being manufactured in Germany and Hungary, and the company is developing a Euro 4 engine which is likely to come out by third quarter next year. Noting that India has witnessed a transition from sedans 20-30 years ago to these present-day cars, he said the company’s focus was more on category than volume of sales.
