Medical student hangs self at AIIMS hostel

A first-year MBBS student of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her hostel room in the wee hours of Sunday. 

The deceased has been identified as Khushboo Chaudhary. According to the police, hostel inmates found the 17-year-old hanging in her room around <g data-gr-id="35">2:50am.</g> They informed the <g data-gr-id="23">hostel</g> security, who in turn called the police. 

A police official said: “The room was locked from inside. We broke open the door and found Khusboo hanging. The body has been sent for <g data-gr-id="24">post mortem</g>.” 

A native of Bikaner, she took admission in MBBS first year on July 10. Police said the body was taken to the emergency wing of AIIMS, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Meanwhile, AIIMS authorities have informed the student’s family about her death. The institute has also conducted an inquiry to find out the cause of her death.

AIIMS spokesperson Dr Amit Gupta said: “A preliminary inquiry by AIIMS ruled out ragging or any adjustment difficulties as a possible cause for her alleged suicide as she had been a student at the AIIMS for six weeks only.” 

Police <g data-gr-id="28">has</g> seized Khushboo’s mobile phone to look for clues. No suicide note was found in her room. According to Khushboo’s friends, she was a cheerful girl and spent Saturday evening with most of her friends, shopping and going out. One of her friends informed police that she had been interacting normally with them till a few hours before her alleged suicide.
