MCD complaint cell to go 24/7 in July

With the monsoon season approaching, Municipal Corporation of Delhi [MCD] has decided to make its complaint cell control room round- the-clock after 30 June to tackle issues like clogging of drains and water-logging.
Round-the-clock service would be made available in 12 zones, including six in north Delhi, four in south Delhi and two in east Delhi. At present, the central control room works from 9 am to 5 pm.
Y S Mann, Director of Press and Information, MCD, said, ’We will set up a round-the-clock control room with helplines in all the 12 zones of MCD. If anyone has problems like water-logging, sanitation, manholes, clogged drains, he/she can call our helplines and their problems will be addressed.’
At present, nearly 263 drains that are over four feet exist in the jurisdiction of East Delhi Municipal Corporation, 395 in South Corporation and 229 in North Corporation.
Public Works Department has 177 drains comprising 121.20 km length in total. Irrigation and flood department has eight drains.
These control rooms would have access to labourers, engineers, sanitation workers, vehicles, five portable pumps and other equipment to tackle the problems of monsoon.
Sources said that, due to constructions in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games, Delhi’s ground surface has become concretised, which also adds to the problem of water-logging in the streets. ‘We will also remove the trees that uproot during monsoon. We have also tied-up with fire department to serve the people better,’ added Mann.
Meanwhile, MCD has identified 22 points prone to water-logging in east Delhi, 29 in the south and 52 in north Delhi.
Earlier, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit chaired a meeting of Apex Committee for Flood Control 2012 and exhorted various agencies, including three MCDs, to work in tandem to ensure foolproof arrangements with an aim to overcome any loss of life and property during floods and monsoon.
Meanwhile, MCD has also demanded for more equipment to deal with the monsoon.
