Maya’s labour minister arrested for corruption

Former Uttar Pradesh labour minister in previous Mayawati government Badshah Singh was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the multi-crore Labour and Construction Cooperative Federation [LACCFED] scam.

The arrest was made after Singh was called in for interrogation by Special Investigation Bureau of the cooperative cell of UP police and subsequently was arrested after he refused to give satisfactory answers to police officials’ queries.

This was the eighth arrest in the scam as seven others including chief engineer Govind Sharan Srivasatava and executive engineer D K Sahu had already been arrested. There were irregularities in schemes of over Rs 400 crore and proofs of commissions worth thousands of crores exchanged hands, according to the investigating agency. It was believed that in majority of the cases money was released without even signing the order book.

'LACCFED was set up to provide easy labour and other help required during construction of roads. But this agency proved a major money earning source for the ministers in the previous Mayawati govt. They pocketed money without even hiring the labour thus depriving the state of several thousand crore of rupees,' a source said. As many as nine Mayawati ministers including Naseemuddin Siddiqui and Babu Singh Kushwaha are under scanner of the SIB for the scam.
