Mastermind of Sonepat jailbreak arrested

The Delhi police crime branch have apprehended a criminal at large, who had escaped along with seven members from Sonepat jail of Haryana.

According to police, a team led by Inspector Rajesh Sharma under the supervision of Additional DCP (Crime) Joy Tirkey have apprehended a desperate criminal Manoj alias Bukhara. Manoj had escaped along with seven other prisoners from Sonepat jail in January this year. One .315 bore country made pistol and two live cartridges have been recovered.

'On an anonymous tip-off, the team laid a trap in Rohini Sector 17 and arrested Manoj,' said Tirkey.

On interrogation, Manoj revealed that he along with seven other dreaded criminals of Haryana had escaped from Sonepat Jail after cutting the grill of barrack number 3A and 3B in the midnight.

He disclosed that in the month of January 2012, he along with Surender, Pardeep and Rajiv were all lodged in Sonepat Jail. They were desperate to come out. They smuggled in a mobile phone and organised their escape from inside the jail.

They managed to smuggle iron cutting blades inside the jail. Manoj, Surender, Pardeep and Raja organised a feast and prepared 'halwa' inside the jail. They secretly mixed sedatives in the halwa so that the jail inmates in their barrack slept while they worked on their escape.

After cutting the iron grill, they scaled the roof and reached the rear wall of the jail. Their associates were already waiting for them outside and they threw ropes over the boundary wall. Manoj along with other inmates scaled the boundary wall with the help of ropes and escaped.

Manoj was involved in four murder cases in Haryana. He disclosed that the reason for his escape was to complete his unfinished business of killing persons inimical to him. He had planned to kill at least half a dozen in Delhi and Haryana. Harayana Police had declared an award of Rs 25,000 for him.
