Maruti GM beaten up, burnt to death

The General Manager [Human Resource] of Maruti Suzuki, Awnish Kumar Dev, was the unfortunate Maruti employee who lost his life in the protest and ensuing turmoil at the Maruti Suzuki plant at Manesar on Wednesday. Forty-year-old Dev, was a resident of Malviya Nagar in Delhi.

Investigations indicate that both his legs were broken by the workers and the union leaders during the protest which is why he couldn’t escape from the conference room on the first floor when the building was later torched by the protesting workers.

Awnish had been working at Maruti Suzuki since 2010. His wife is an employee at the Ministry of Defence. The couple have a 19-year-old son who is studying in class XII in Delhi. After hearing the news of the deadly riot in the Manesar plant, Awnish's brother-in-law tried to contact him several times, but failed. He then went to the hospital to check the injured people, thinking he might find him there. But, he was unable to find him in the causality room.

When he started inquiring about Awnish, one of the police officials asked him to check the dead body of a person who had been burnt and killed in the fire. Awnish’s friend identified the body as that of his friend. He then informed Awnish's family of his death.

Awnish was a native of Ranchi where his parents still reside. He left Ranchi with his wife when he got a job in Delhi. His son was born here.

Maheshwar Dayal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Gurgaon, said, 'Multiple injuries have been found on the deceased’s body. The body has been send for post-mortem and only after the autopsy report is received will the reason of Dev's death be clear.'

Sources in the police told Millennium Post that 'It seems to be a planned murder, as multiple injuries were noticed on Dev's body. It might be possible that owing to the injuries he received, he was unable to come out after the fire broke out in the administration office. His body was found beneath a table, and that raises the question what it could have been doing there. It is possible that after being beaten up by the workers, he hid himself beneath the table and was later killed in the fire.’

About 85 people were injured in the mob. This includes three Japanese and nine policemen. 'At the time when the negotiation was been carried out in the administration office, the union leaders and the workers started beating up the management. Their main targets were the managers, executives and the supervisors. Unfortunately, the GM, Awnish Kumar Dev was brutally beaten up. One Japanese plant manager, Saijio and an advisor, Tori were also present in the conference room and were targetted by the workers,' said a Maruti official.

The official added that the workers were carrying iron rods with them. They were not ready to hear anything. The meeting turned into a riot, resulting into various people being beaten up. Some started bleeding profusely, while a few became unconscious. The workers along with the union broke the glass panels, damaged property and more.

The union however blamed the management of extreme behaviour. If the workers take more time in the washroom, the management punishes them, if their dress is torn, wrinkled, stained, then the workers are at the receiving end of their barbs. About 65% of the workers are temporary or employed on contract basis, the union said.
