Mark Atal’s b’day on X’mas: MHRD to DU colleges

The Dean of Colleges of Delhi University Professor Malashri Lal on Tuesday forwarded an HRD Ministry circular to the principals of colleges in this regard.

The principals have also been asked to submit a compliance report by December 29 or be ready to face action.

The circular has been sent despite HRD Minister Smiriti Irani on Monday issuing a clarification that no education institution is being asked to be open on the Christmas Day.

While classes are already over in Delhi University since December 11 in the wake of semester exams, the winter vacation would officially begin on December 20 and colleges would reopen only on January 5. The principals of colleges are in a catch-22 situation at the moment, since they are tasked with organising seminars during the ongoing winter vacation without many students available to attend them.

Earlier, the HRD Ministry was forced retract after Opposition made a hue and cry over ministry’s order to Navodaya Vidyalayas and CBSE schools to remain open on X’mas to mark the ‘good governance day’. Ministry officials, however, claimed that December 25 will not be a working day for students and that the essay competition will be online. They also claim all activities are voluntary. In a series of tweets, HRD minister Smriti Irani said all schools will remain closed for Christmas and the essay competition will be ‘online’ and is ‘voluntary’.
