Maoist couple booked under various sections

Maoist couple Bikash and his wife Tara was on Tuesday booked under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act after being produced before the Bankshall Court.

It may be mentioned that the Special Task Force of the Kolkata Police had arrested the Maoist couple, who were close aides of their slain leader Kishenji, on April 2.

They were produced before the court amidst tight security. Both of them were booked under sections 16, 16(1), 16 B, 18, 20, 38, 39 and 40 of the UAPA. They were also remanded in police custody till May 2. They were again remanded in the police custody as section 43(B) of CrPC allows the custody for 30 days.

The police’s counsel on Tuesday submitted before the court that police need to interrogate them further and pleaded for police custody as they were involved with the Maoist activities for the past eight to nine years.

The defence counsel objected to the plea for police custody and also submitted that there were no such allegations or evidence for which they can be booked under UAPA.
