Man’s body found in drum under Vidyasagar Setu ramp

Mystery shrouds the death of a man, whose body with several injury marks was found inside a plastic drum under a ramp connecting Vidyasagar Setu near Hastings on Wednesday morning.

A police officer said that they are yet to ascertain the identity of the person, but they found two tattoos on both of his hands. “Rana” was written on one hand while on the other hand there was a tattoo of “Om” sign.

On Wednesday morning, a local resident saw the body inside a plastic drum which is usually used to transport fishes to market. He had initially thought that the person was in an inebriated state and fell inside the drum accidentally. He became sure that he was dead when he approached closer. He informed the matter to a traffic sergeant who was passing through the area.

Subsequently, policemen from Maidan police station rushed to the spot and sent the body for an autopsy. Officers from the homicide section of the city police’s detective department visited the spot and collected samples.

The police are trying to ascertain how the body came there by going through footages of surveillance cameras installed in the area.

A police officer said that preliminary investigation revealed that he was killed elsewhere and later dumped at the spot that turns deserted when evening falls.

The police are also not ruling out the possibility of dumping of the body from above the ramp after bringing it in a car. The police are trying to find whether any missing complaint has been lodged in any police station for someone called Rana.

It may be mentioned that this is the second incident of body recovery in the city within a week. A few days ago, the body of a woman was found on the pavement at Park Street and identity of the woman was initially not known. But the police had cracked the case within a couple of days.
