Man throws chilli powder in girls’ eyes, arrested

The repeated attacks on the women on Delhi Road at Polba had led to panic among the local people. It may be recalled that at the same area a girl was crushed under the wheel of a mini-truck after the attempt of the vehicle’s helper to kidnap her had failed on June 24.

Police said that the victim girls work in an office in the area. Like all other days they had taken an auto-rickshaw after reaching Chinsurah station by train. They had to walk around 500 metre to reach their office after getting off the auto-rickshaw.

The accused man caught the hands of both the girls and tried to drag them inside the bushes beside Delhi Road. But the girls started crying for help. Failing to drag them aside, the man threw chilli powder in the faces of the girls and attempted to flee.

But his attempt failed as local people rushed to the spot hearing their cries for help and caught him. The police soon rushed to the spot. Local people handed him over to the police. A police officer said after preliminary investigation that it seemed that the girls were known to the man. One of the girls had an affair with the man. A few days ago there was some problem among them and girl disagreed to continue the affair. The attack could be the fallout of the same, police suspect.

The police had taken steps to ensure security of people on Delhi Road after the incident had taken place on June 24. Patrolling in the area was intensified. After Friday’s incident, local people once again approached the police requesting to take necessary steps so that everyone can use the road without being worrying about their safety. There are many areas on the stretch of the road that remain deserted most of the time even during day.

A senior police officer said that a meeting among top brass of the district police will be held soon to discuss the issues. The senior police officers will meet to find a way out to check repetition of such incidents not only in Delhi Road but also in other highways those passing through the district.
