Man throws acid at wife after reconciliation attempt fails

Karvachauth is considered to be a very auspicious ceremony for married women by many, wherein, a lady keeps fast for her husband’s long life. However, a day before this ceremony, on Tuesday, a brawl between a couple led to an acid attack on the woman and her minor sister by the husband and his brothers.

The married woman (19) and her minor sister (10) were attacked with acid by the 34-year-old husband and his two brothers in Outer Delhi’s Rohini Sector 16. According to the police, the woman was identified as Amanpreet Kaur who sustained burn injuries on her neck, hands and legs while her sister received minor burn injuries on her legs.

Police said that the accused has been identified as the victim’s husband, Pradeep. He too sustained burn injuries as Amanpreet fought off her attackers which led to the acid falling onto his legs.

Sources said that the attack was a result of Amanpreet’s efforts to get a divorce from Pradeep, whom she married five months back. Police said that they have arrested Pradeep while two of his brothers Jeetu and Kapil are still absconding.

The incident took place at around 9.30 pm on Tuesday at District Park in Sardar Colony area of Rohini Sector-16.

Amanpreet lived with her mother who runs a small eatery at Sardar Colony. She was on her way to visit her aunt who works at a local parlour to finalise her travel plans to attend a relative’s funeral in Punjab.

As Amanpreet was walking towards the parlour she was confronted by Pradeep. He asked her to accompany him to the local park to sort out their marital dispute. However, when she refused, he dragged her by her hair and pulled her inside District Park where his brothers Jeetu and Kapil were waiting.

Pradeep then tried to chase Amanpreet with the bottle of acid in order to throw the contents on her face. But Amanpreet fought him off and shoved him because of which some of the contents of the bottle spilled onto Pradeep. In the ensuing chaos, Ramanpreet, the minor sister of Amanpreet, also suffered burn injuries on her legs.

Meanwhile, Ramanpreet rushed to her house and narrated the entire incident after which her relatives reached the spot and took Amanpreet and her sister to Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini. The doctors then referred the sisters to Safdarjung Hospital where they were treated for burn injuries. Meanwhile, the relatives registered a complaint at the KN Katju Marg police station after which a case was registered under Section 326A of the IPC.

After the police reached the hospital they took a stock of the medical situation of the injured after which Pradeep was arrested who too, was undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
