Man shot at for resisting snatching bid

In a daylight firing incident in the city, a 28-year-old man was shot at in the Mansarovar park area of north east Delhi by two bike borne assailants when he tried to foil a bid to snatch a chain from a woman, on Wednesday.

Police said the incident took place around 3 pm. A woman identified as Manju had come to visit a relative living in Durgapuri area. She was accompanied by another relative named Sanju. They were walking down the road near Durgapuri extension, when they were stopped by the assailants.

They allegedly tried to snatch the gold chain that Manju was wearing. In an attempt to raise an alarm, Manju started shouting for help. Few metres from the scene of crime, a couple sitting inside a black-coloured Hyundai Getz, swung into action and the man, identified as Vinay (28), on the driving seat, rammed the car into the assailants' motorcycle.

The snatchers fell on the road as a result of the impact. One of them then opened fire and pumped a bullet into Vinay's abdomen. They also fired on his wife Chanchal sitting on the other seat, but she narrowly escaped. The assailants then ran away from the scene, leaving the motorcycle behind. The incident took place in a busy market which created panic in the area.

Immediately after the incident, police was informed and an injured Vinay was taken to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Doctors said his condition was critical.

Vinay, an employee in a private firm in Noida, lives in Ashok Nagar area. He had come to meet a relative in Durgapuri along with his wife. While Manju hails from Bharatpur in UP and had come to Delhi only a few days back along with her husband Ravinder, a police officer informed.

The eyewitnesses told the police that all three women tried to nab the chain snatchers after the firing. But the latter ran away while firing shots in the air, within a few seconds. The police recovered some used cartridges and bullets from the spot. A case has been registered at Mansarovar Park police station and the police has started the investigation.
