Man posing as customs officer arrested

A 53-year-old man was arrested here for allegedly posing as a customs officer and cheating people, police said on Monday.

The arrested has been identified as Daman Khurana, whose elder daughter works in a private airline and the younger one studies in London.

Khurana was arrested following investigations into a complaint filed by one Anil Sharma, who claimed that he was cheated of Rs 65,000 by one Pradeep Chug, who claimed to be a customs officer at the IGI airport.

During a train journey to Chandigarh, the complainant claimed, Sharma was befriended by Khurana, who introduced himself as customs officer Chug. The accused allegedly used to call Sharma on his cell phone for exchange of routine wishes and for friendly conversations.

The complainant claimed once he was offered by Khurana an LED TV, laptop and Apple phone for Rs 65,000 against the market value of around Rs 1.5 lakh.

Sharma paid Rs 65,000 in three installments to Khurana, who later allegedly started avoiding him on one pretext or the other.

‘However, Khurana sent an SMS one day regarding the delivery of goods from the warehouse of the customs very shortly. But he could not be contacted later,’ B S Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer), said.

After analysing the call records of Khurana, he was given a missed call. Khurana then started to allure the police personnel to provide them the confiscated items by the customs.

‘During the first meeting, he was arrested,’ Jaiswal said.
