Man mistaken as thief roughed up in Bankura hospital

A person who got his wife admitted to Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital for delivery was mistaken as a thief by some people and was thrashed by them.

Police said that the incident had taken place at the hospital a little after midnight on Tuesday when the victim was standing in front of gynaecological ward of the hospital.

On Tuesday night, around Rs 400 was stolen from a relative of patient outside the gynaecological department. The relatives were discussing this in front of the department when they saw someone running away from the place.

The victim was roaming there and the mob mistook him for the thief and beat him up. The victim, a local resident, tried to convince the people that he is not a thief and he had admitted his wife to the hospital. But the mob continued and beat him up as a result of which the victim received serious injuries on his forehead, chin and other parts of the body.

Few minutes later, the relatives of the patients realised their mistake. Meanwhile the staff members of the hospital also rushed to the spot and took the victim from the place. The incident triggered tension in the hospital.

The hospital authorities asked the police to look into the matter. The victim told the police that he pleaded that he was innocent but the mob beat him up.

After hearing about the incident, police reached the spot and brought the situation under control and diffused the tension which was prevailing among the people. The injured victim was taken for treatment in the emergency ward of the hospital.

Police have started an investigation in this regard and interrogating the people who led the attack on the victim. Police are also investigating that if the incident was orchestrated with any particular motive.
