Man loses leg in botched suicide attempt

A patient fled from a nursing home in Howrah and attempted suicide by throwing himself before a running train. He, however, survived but lost his leg.

Niranjan Roy was ailing with piles and was admitted to the nursing home a few days ago. Late on Saturday, Roy escaped the building and went to Uluberia station where he dived in front of a rushing Midnapore local. He was tottering with unbearable pain on the track when the locals rescued him. Government railway police (GRP) officers took him to the hospital.

The nursing home authorities reportedly said that the patient was frustrated and agonised with his plight and had lost all hope of becoming normal again. Roy’s family, however, alleged negligence on the part of the nursing home. “This hospital has no security. They do not even have a security guard. The hospital authority should take the onus,” said Roy’s daughter, Sila Samanta. The hospital authorities said they will conduct an inquiry into the incident.
