Man held for threatening MP granted interim bail

A city court on Thursday granted interim bail to Dipanjan Mitra, arrested for sending threat messages to Leader of Trinamool Congress in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhyay. Mitra, 32, who was booked under IPC sections 120B(1) and 506(1), was granted interim bail on payment of Rs 800 by the court, though the police appealed for six-day custody.

Mitra’s counsel submitted that his client had a “family relationship” with Bandyopadhyay and that the TMC leader had promised him a job seeing his potential as a photographer. His counsel further claimed that Mitra, an unemployed youth, had met the MP several times in the last two years. And when he found that the MP’s promise of giving a job was not fulfilled he send the text messages, the lawyer said. Kolkata Police yesterday arrested Mitra from his Kasba home after Bandyopadhyay filed an FIR at Taltala police station.

The mobile phone from which the text messages to Bandyopadhyay were sent, was also seized.
