Man held for raping minor girl

A 45-year-old man has been arrested on the charges of raping a minor girl at Deep Char area under Ward number 15 of Alipurduar municipality. The incident triggered tension in the area. Police said that the victim, an 11-year-old girl was studying inside her house and her mother was at a neighbour’s house in the area. Taking advantage of the victim being alone in the house, the accused entered into her house.

The victim’s father stays away from the house for work. The accused Sanjit Mondal, a local resident was familiar with the victim and this is why she allowed him inside the house. But the accused put a piece of cloth around her mouth and dragged her into a nearby bush where he allegedly committed the crime. The accused left her in the area and fled the spot.

The victim, somehow, managed to return home in a distressed condition and narrated the ordeal she had gone through. As she fell ill she was taken to a nearby health centre.

The victim’s mother lodged a complaint in the local police station against the accused on the basis of which police have arrested the accused from a nearby village where he had taken refuge to evade an arrest.

The accused, however, denied the allegation and said that he has been framed. In the interrogation, the accused Mondal told the police that he did not commit the crime. He has been framed as someone was trying to malign his image in the locality for some unknown reason.

Local residents of the area, however, demanded strong action against the accused as he had committed a heinous crime. After the matter came to light, the local residents had gheraoed the house of the victim which is situated in the locality.

The police had to intervene to pacify the mob. They brought the situation under control as they assured the agitators that strong action will be taken against the accused.
