Man found dead on NH-34

Mystery shrouds the death of a 35-year-old man whose body was found in a ditch beside National Highway 34 near Gabgachi, Malda on Monday morning. Police said the victim, Kamalesh Thakur, was a resident of Golapatti area in Malda Town, and used to work as a manager in an eatery in the area.
He had gone missing two days ago and his family members reportedly tried their level best to find him, but could not succeed.

On Monday morning, some local people found his body in a ditch beside the NH-34 and informed the police. However, no one from the English Bazaar police station reached the spot to take the body even after two hours of the incident.

By the time cops reached the spot, hundreds of people had gathered in the area. The local people had eventually put up a road block protesting the delay by the police in recovering the body.
They also demanded a proper probe into the incident. The road block led to massive traffic congestion on the national highway. Police took about an hour and a half to ease the traffic movement. The roadblock was finally withdrawn after the body was sent for an autopsy and senior police officers of the district assured that there will be a proper probe into the incident.

A police officer said that the victim was an alcoholic, but the exact reason behind his death could be ascertained only after the post mortem report arrives. His family members visited the spot after being informed by their neighbours.

The victim’s brother, Chandan Thakur, alleged that Kamalesh was murdered somewhere else and later dumped in the ditch. It seems he was murdered after the miscreants had snatched away his valuables and purse.

Police could not find the victim’s cell phone or his purse from the spot, suggesting that it was not a natural death.
