Man convicted in over 350 cheating cases held

The Delhi Police Crime Branch on Sunday arrested a 66-year-old property dealer convicted to a total of 181 years jail by a consumer court here in over 350 cases of cheating and declared as a Proclaimed Offender.

Rajender Mittal, who is into property business, has allegedly cheated 367 people in a planned manner by offering to sell plots. Police said Mittal was absconding in all cases and was declared a Proclaimed Offender in 2013 when 19 witnesses had been examined. He was arrested in 1991 and but had come out on bail in two-three months. He had been absconding since then.

“Mittal had cheated 367 people in various property dealing cases. A consumer court at Tis Hazari awarded him six months of jail in every case, following which he is convicted for 181 years,” Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner (Crime), said.

Yadav said that on June 13 this year, Karkardooma Court directed the Crime Branch to take strategic action for apprehending Mittal and producing him before it.

A team, led by ACP Anand Kumar Mishra, Inspector Vinay Tyagi, sub-inpectors Raj Kumar, Dinesh among others was constituted under supervision of DCP G Ramgopal Naik, and under the guidance of Additional CP KK Vyas to nab Mittal.

Two other accused – Gajraj and DK Dua – who are associates of Mittal, said he had amassed huge wealth by cheating hundreds of persons and was named in two-three other FIRs in Delhi. The two told police that Mittal might be involved in many other cases in Delhi and UP. Mittal has studied upto Class 12 from Panipat. He started dealing in property at the age of 20 and had his office at Vikas Marg in Lakshmi Nagar.
