Man arrested for raping two minors at destitute home

A man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping two minor girls from a destitute home at Baburhat area in Cooch Behar, police said. The district magistrate of Cooch Behar has show caused the superintendent of the destitute home. 

The accused have been identified as Kachua Mia, who was a contractual worker at the home. After interrogating Mia, police came to know that he repeatedly raped the two minor girls and as a result one of them eventually became pregnant. 

The incident came to light five days after the accused was remanded in judicial custody following his arrest. 

The local residents have raised a question on how the home authorities was not aware of what was going inside it?

Police said Mia had raped the girls over a period of four months. Some other inmates informed the matter to the Sishu Kalyan Samiti after which Mia was expelled from work. On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered at Kotoyali police station. Police have later arrested the culprit from Sitalkuchi on January 7. After being produced before the court on the same day, the accused was remanded in judicial custody. 

Both the girls were taken to the hospital where the doctors found that one of them was pregnant. 

The Sishu Kalyan Samiti has also been conducting an inquiry into the incident. The other inmates of the destitute home were being interrogated. 

A senior police officer in the district said that the Child Welfare Committee has been conducting a probe. 

In 2012, a woman was raped and murdered inside the home at Gurap in Hooghly. The accused were arrested. Investigation is underway.
