Mamata urges Prabhu to expedite Joka-BBD Bag Metro project

Stating that the state government will extend all necessary support, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to expedite the work to complete the Joka-BBD Bag Metro project fast. Prabhu and Banerjee spoke to media persons in Nabanna after a meeting on the
ongoing projects of the railways in the state.

In a reply to a question on the progress of work of the Joka-BBD Bag project, Banerjee said that on Wednesday Mayor Sovan Chatterjee held a meeting with the Defence authorities to sort out the
issue that is causing hindrance to the project.

The government has taken initiatives to give rehabilitation and the matter will be sort out soon. After clearing the present stand of the state government on the project, Banerjee told Prabhu that there are many major thoroughfares on the route of the on-going project.

Common people are facing inconvenience due to traffic congestion. It would be good if the work to complete the project can be expedited. She also urged the Railway Minister to send a team that will take necessary steps to expedite the work.

In reply, Prabhu said that he will look into the matter on priority basis and steps will be taken to complete the project within the stipulated time. Meanwhile, a rail wagon project at Kulti in West Bengal, which was initiated by Mamata Banerjee during her stint as the railway minister in 2011, is set to become operational soon.

“The railways has fostered a joint venture between two public sector undertakings and we (railways) will have an indirect participation. The project is likely to be commissioned very shortly,” Hemant Kumar, Railway Board member, said at an interactive session with the Railway Minister hosted by MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Banerjee had laid the foundation stone for the project and work on the factory had began in 2011.
