Mamata reaches out to PM, to take up debt-waiver

Welcoming PM Narendra Modi’s nod to the Finance Commission’s recommendations on an increased share for states from the central pool, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sought appointment with him to urge a debt waiver for her cash-strapped state. Mamata is trying to reach out to the PM for the first time and is also likely to discuss her recent Bangladesh visit. Banerjee on Wednesday, said she has written to Modi urging a debt waiver.

“We have long been pursuing with the Central government for waiver of the huge debt burden left upon us by the previous government in West Bengal. We have waited for more than three-and-a-half years with no results,” Banerjee said on her official FB page. “Our state needs an immediate relief from the debt burden so that growth and development efforts could continue unhindered. I have, therefore, written to the Prime Minister to consider waiver of the debt burden on us immediately,” she stated.
