Mamata in impressive show of womanpower

Banerjee led a mammoth rally on Tuesday to mark the occasion of International Women’s Day. The 5.3km procession started at Shyambazar five-point crossing and ended at Dorina Crossing, while passing through important thoroughfares like Bidhan Sarani, Nirmal Chandra Sarani and Lenin Sarani to reach the venue.

Thousands of people joined the rally as it proceeded towards the destination while many more stood on the road congratulating the party supremo. Banerjee garlanded the statue of Swami Vivekananda installed in front of his ancestral house on Bidhan Sarani and sought blessings of the monks of Ramakrishna Mission.

The rally started at around 2 pm, with Banerjee leading thousands of women supporters of her party. On reaching Dorina Crossing, she expressed her gratitude and thanked everyone for participating. She said: “It is an important thoroughfare and I don’t want to hold any meeting here. But I thank all my brothers and sisters for taking part in the rally.” After urging people to repose faith in Trinamool Congress, she ended the brief address with the slogan: ‘Thanda Thanda Cool Cool, Abar Ashbe Trinamool’ and ‘Haat Haturi Padmo, Bhalo Kore Korun Jabdo.’

Women supporters of the party from different parts of the state came to the city and took part in the rally. Supporters from districts including Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24-Parganas reached Shyambazar by bus in the morning and joined the rally. Pratima Tudu from Jungle Mahal said, “ I came here to support Mamata for the initiatives she has taken for empowerment of women.”

The rally, that also marked the beginning of Banerjee’s campaign for the Assembly election, was attended by the party’s women candidates from across the state. Trinamool candidates from the city and its adjoining districts, including Chandrima Bhattacharya (contesting from Dum Dum Uttar Assembly constituency), Dr Shashi Panja (candidate from Shyampukur Assembly constituency), Smita Bakshi (candidate from Jorasanko Assembly constituency), Nayana Bandhyopadhyay and Vaishali Dalmiya, who is contesting from Bally Assembly constituency, were seen walking alongside Banerjee.

Women participants highlighted Banerjee’s projects on empowerment of women. They also pointed out how Mamata’s  Kanyashree had transformed the lives of girls in the state.
