Mamata gives rail bonanza to Bengal

The West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced a slew of new manufacturing projects in the railways sector for the state – reinforcing the image of a shining Bengal. She flagged off the new diesel locomotive parts plant of the Indian Railways at Dankuni on Monday.

'Another Indian Railways plant will come here shortly. Dankuni will be touched by a dedicated freight corridor connecting it to Sonepur. There will be factories in Asansol, Burdwan, Howrah, Birbhum and Hooghly. There will be lakhs of new jobs,' announced Banerjee, who was accompanied by Mukul Roy, the union railways minister, the Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee and the railway board Chairperson V N Vittal.

Rattling off a list of 15 upcoming projects in the railways sector, Banerjee said that there would be two factories in Budge Budge by the year end, plants in Kanchrapara, Haldia and Cooch Behar and an iron ore plant in Durgapur. A new power plant with the capacity to produce 500 MW of electricity will be set up at the cost of Rs 8,500 crore in Adra. New railway links will also connect places like Dankuni, Arambagh, Furfura Sharif, Kamarpukur and Joyrambati. 'We know how to work. The state government has already created three lakh government jobs, including for teachers and policemen. In the 100-day work scheme, we have topped the nation, creating 15 crore jobs,' she stated.

Banerjee also reiterated her government's commitment to returning 400 acres of land to Singur farmers. She added that a factory will come up on the rest of the 600 acres of land which was acquired by the previous Left Front government for setting up a plant by the Tatas.

'A proposal for a Metro railway plant is lying with us. We are just waiting for the court verdict. The state government has already acquired the land,' she said.
