Mamata gives a pleasant surprise to Prez Pranab

In what can be viewed as a gesture to keep a window open with the Congress, West Bengal chief Mamata Banerjee has said that her party Trinamool Congress will not be putting up a candidate against President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee in the bypolls to Jangipur Lok Sabha seat.

Even though TMC withdrew support from the United Progressive Alliance, Mamata made sure she remained nice to Mukherjee’s son, by not participating in the Jangipur bypoll elections, even though her party has a strong hold in the area.

According to reports TMC district president Mohammed Ali said, ‘This was Pranab babu’s seat. And the candidate now is his son so as a mark of respect to the President, we didn’t put up any candidate.’

Although BJP’s Sudhanshu Biswas is also in the fray, the contest would be virtually between CPI(M)’s Muzaffar Hussain and Abhijit Mukherjee.

Altogether eleven candidates have filed their papers for the assembly seat, official sources said. The last date for filing nomination ended on Saturday while the last date for withdrawal is 26 September.

The election would take place on 10 October. Bypoll for the Jangipur Lok Sabha seat was necessitated after Pranab Mukherjee resigned his seat to contest for the post of President of India. Pranab had first won from the Jangipur Lok Sabha seat in 2004 and was re-elected in 2009.
