Mamata Banerjee to attend Global Business Conference in Bangkok

Monday was Banerjee’s first day in Nabanna after returning from her tour to Italy and Germany. Expressing her satisfaction over discussions with industrialists during her tour, she said that Bengal is the only and best destination for investment.

“There is enormous capacity in Bengal while other states have completely exhausted,” she said, adding that Bengal is the route of trade for various countries including Singapore, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan.

“We are going to attend Bangkok Global Conference. They have invited me to speak on behalf of Bengal because they think the state to be the right destination for investment. They had travelled to Munich to invite me to attend the conference,” she said.

“During our visit to Germany we requested BMW and people from other industries to invest in Bengal. It was a very good gathering. Top businessmen from many companies, starting from BMW to Siemens, including Purnendu Chatterjee were present. Let us hope for the good. Germany is also sending their representatives for Bengal Global Business Summit,” Banerjee said. She added that Bengal was number one in the manufacturing industry, which is why BMW has been requested to invest in the state.

Italy is famous for its leather and jewellery industry. There would also be investment for a shoe factory in Kalyani. Italy is also sending its representatives to the Bengal Global Business Summit.
Banerjee said that that she returned with investment of Rs 450 crore investments for the expansion of a solar power project and an order for supply of 25 lakh jute bags. Jute is a huge industry in Bengal and the Centre practically looks after the sector. “But our attempt will help members of self help groups to get more work. Jute cultivators will also be benefitted,” she said.

It may be mentioned that the Banerjee government had been working continuously for the past few years to bring in investment for the state. The Bengal Global Business Summit was started and it helped in attracting investment. In 2017, the Summit will be held on January 20 and 21 where delegates from many countries will be present. After forming the government for a second term, the Chief Minister stated that the target would be to bring in more investment for the state.
