Malnutrition kills another tea garden worker in Dooars

A 48-year-old worker of a closed tea garden in Dooars died due to hunger and malnutrition early on Thursday morning.

The victim Bini Orao was a permanent employee of the closed Red Bank tea garden. He used to stay in a portion of the garden. On Thursday he died at Birpara General Hospital.

Orao’s family members claimed that he had no money for treatment. He was suffering from malnutrition for the past few months. He was undergoing treatment at a medical camp in the tea garden. He was admitted to the hospital a few days ago as his condition deteriorated. He died in the hospital on Thursday morning.

The three tea gardens of the Red Bank group were closed on October 13, 2013. Later the state government had taken over the tea garden. A total of 82 workers of the closed tea garden died till date.

It may be mentioned that a 65-year-old worker of a closed tea garden in Birpara, Bentick Dungdong died due to same reasons.

Many workers of the closed tea garden in North Bengal have migrated to other parts of the state in search of jobs. But a large section of the workers expect that the situation will change and they will come out of the existing problem.
