Maliwal meets Home Secy, demands enhanced security at GB Road

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal on Monday met the Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and demanded appointment of a “sensible” lady officer at Kamla Market police station to bolster security at GB Road, the largest red-light area in the national capital.

“The DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal on Monday met the Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and discussed issues related to women’s safety in the city,” a DCW official said.

“Maliwal demanded appointment of a sensible lady police officer at Kamla Market police to bolster security at GB Road red-light area here to tackle crimes and keep a check on the cases of trafficking,” the official said.

Maliwal had recently approached police along with a physically-handicapped sex worker seeking registration of a case against the family members of the woman’s live-in partner, who allegedly have confined him in their house as they were opposed to the relationship. According to the official, Maliwal also demanded that the vacant police posts should be filled up to strengthen security cover across Delhi.

Meanwhile, Maliwal on Monday urged Delhi Government to approve the proposed ‘Victim Compensation Scheme’ for the benefit of the assault victims. In a letter to Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain, Maliwal also urged him to share details of the proposed ‘Victim Compensation Scheme’ so that the Commission can also give its inputs on it.
