Maintaining the mane

Imagine the plight of Rapunzel if she was living in Delhi, especially in the summer months? Well, the UV rays of the sun don't just wreck our skin they spell disaster for our hair too.

But apart from just looking good, hair is also an indicator of good health. Some of the common problems that trouble the mane in the hot months are hair-fall, dryness, breakage, dandruff, frizzyness and more.

Agrees beauty expert Ritu Makhija: 'Most of the people suffer from dry and frizzy hair. The root cause is dehydration. You should condition your hair well and ensure your diet includes the required amount of fibres and protein.'

Also, she says one should cover the hair while going out. 'The ideal solution for frizzy hair is an anti-frizz pack. Apply yoghurt and leave it on for a few minutes before washing off,' she says.

One can also apply egg white on the scalp which serves as a major source of protein. Also, replace the coconut oil with olive oil. 'Excessive oil will block the pores on your scalp which can lead to hair fall, poor quality and slower growth of hair. Whenever you do apply oil, ensure its just enough to coat the scalp and hair,' says Yatan Ahluwalia, Director, Y&E style media.

Many believe that washing hair regularly will weaken the roots and cause hair fall. Hair experts and doctors don't agree. 'It's good to wash your hair regularly as long as you are using a good hydrating shampoo. And don't use conditioner on scalp, just the length,' says beauty expert Megha Khanna.

If you go for swimming regularly, wear a cap so that the chlorine doesn't damage your hair. 'Wet your hair before going into the pool. Use leave-in conditioners with sunscreen,' says Dr Mandeep Singh, consultant cosematic and plastic surgeon.

And oh, don't forget to raid the kitchen for some home remedies. 'Curd water, Fuller's earth added with a mashed banana is ideal for soft, silky hair,' says Megha.
