Mahishadal accident: Cops rule out eve-teasing in girl’s death

The police ruled out the allegations of eve-teasing which led the death of Madhumita Bag, a 16-year-old school girl on Thursday evening at Mahishadal.

The superintendent of police, East Midnapore, Alok Rajoria said: “It was a case of rash driving, as no proof of eve-teasing was found by the investigators. However, the eye-witnesses confirmed that the accused youth teased those girls there and later mowed them down after losing control over their car. Madhumita, the girl studying in Class XI died while two of her friends were injured.

Meanwhile, Dipendu Das and Subrata Maity, two accused, who were arrested on Thursday from the spot, were taken to the court and remanded to judicial custody.

Three youth mowed them down with a car in which they were travelling in on NH 41 off Tajpur- Mahishadal in East Midnapore. The police arrested two youth while the third one fled. The director general of police Surajit Kar Purakayastha on Thursday said that a murder case would be initiated against the accused. He also added that such cases would not be tolerated.

However, the locals and guardians of the slain girl and her friends who were injured refused to acknowledge that it was only a rash driving. They alleged that those Road-Romeos were trying to drive the car close to those girls and they were making lewd comments at those girls. Suddenly the driver lost the control over his steering and mowed down the girls.

It is to be recalled that the police said the victim along with two of her friends were going for tuition on their bicycles at around 4 pm on Thursday. The car carrying a driver and three youth had been teasing them for quite some time. They made lewd comments and were chasing their cycles. The victim along with two others tried to flee the spot by peddling fast. Unable to control the vehicle, the driver hit the victim from behind and she died on the spot. They two others were taken to the hospital where they were admitted.

Local people chased the vehicle and stopped it. They got hold of two youth while the third one and the driver fled. The youth were beaten up and later handed over to the police. Police went to the spot and rescued the accused. After hitting the victim, the vehicle fell into a ditch.

The incident created tension in the area with local people demanding exemplary punishment for the accused.
