Mahatma, Shastri remembered: Leaders make beeline to samadhis

The Delhi government on Sunday celebrated the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri with great vigour.

Leaders of the state government paid tribute to Shastri at his samadhi at Vijay Ghat. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia also visited Vijay Ghat. 

They later visited Raj Ghat and paid tribute to Gandhi.

Shastri’s grandson and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Adarsh Shastri also paid tributes to the veteran leader at his samadhi and participated in the prayer meeting. He reiterated the famous “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” slogan coined by his illustrious grandfather.

Delhi Assembly speaker Ram Niwas Goel, ministers and politicians across party lines paid paid homaage to the former Prime Minister.

Besides, a function was organised to observe the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Shastri at the Assembly. 

Goel said Gandhi’s belief in simple living has been a beacon of hope for all, especially those coming from the marginalised section of society. 

“Mahatma Gandhi was the main leader of India’s freedom struggle.  Mahatma Gandhi’s achievements are unique in the political history. He has invented a humane approach to liberate the oppressed in the country and practised it with great energy and devotion,” said Kejriwal. 

Besides, President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Prime MInister Manmohan Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party patriarch Lal Krishna Advani paid tribute to Gandhi and Shastri.
