Maha industry leader, not Gujarat: Chavan

‘Since 1960 when both Gujarat and Maharashtra became separate states, Maharashtra has been number one in industrial sector development as data shows. Prime minister Narendra Modi is good at marketing techniques of figures and has managed to trick the country,’

said Chavan while speaking on ‘Number 1 Kaun Maharashtra Ya Gujarat’ in Mumbai.

Pooh-poohing reports about people’s anger about increasing crime in Mumbai as ‘pre-conceived notions’, he said Maharashtra’s

purchasing power came from its farmers’ efforts on usage of barely 18 per cent land – compared to Haryana and Punjab irrigating approximately 90 per cent of their land and still coming through successfully after facing many natural calamities.

‘Mumbai still kept witnessing people coming from all over the world, country and state to earn their livelihood here, he said.

Commenting on the Congress’ ‘Mumbai to Shanghai’ vision conceived, Chavan  described the city’s infrastructure as incredibly good where huge projects costing anywhere from Rs 15,000 crore to Rs 1 lakh crore were moving even in the face of having to move out as many as 40,000 people alongside ‘Mandirs, Masjids and Churches’ in the course of such developments.

To questions about scams occurring in Maharashtra, he said the Congress had worked on controlling it and hence brought in the Right to Information Act.
