After getting the tag of being insensitive, Delhi police has now been accused of harassing people in the garb of patrolling. In a recent incident, a 35-year-old Metropolitan Magistrate accused the police of harassing him unnecessarily for hours, late on Wednesday evening, at Ashok Vihar police station.
According to the complainant, around 8.30 pm, Metropolitan Magistrate Sneha (name withheld), a resident of Gulabi Bagh, was going to attend a wedding function in Mundka along with her husband, Rajender Kumar, 36, advocate and their one-and-half year old son in her Maruti Swift Dezire car.
On the way at Deep market in Ashok Vihar area of north-west district, the couple stopped to buy something from a chemist. They parked their car outside the market area, where around six more cars were already parked. When they returned, they saw Delhi police head constable, Umed, and Inspector Satpal standing near their car.
The moment the couple approached their car, the duo, along with three more cops, started insulting the couple. The cop charged them of parking the vehicle in no parking zone, on which the complainant asked for challan for the offence. Instead of issuing a challan, the cops insisted on production of driving license and registration papers, Kumar said.
He added, ‘For hours, we were harassed on the road as if we were criminals. At 10.30 pm, when the SHO came to the spot, he took us to the police station where we narrated him the entire incident. He did not accept the complaint against the cops. Then later, we approached deputy commissioner of police (north-west) P Karunakaran. On his insistence, SHO accepted the complaint.’
On Thursday, Sneha registered a complaint before the District and Sessions Judge, Central District. When the SHO was contacted, he called the incident a case of ego clash.
He defended his constable and said, ‘He was trying to create balance on the road. Also, he was not authorised to challan any vehicle, as he is not in the Traffic department. Senior officials are inquiring the matter after the complaint to DCP.’
