'Mad' rush at the councillors' meet

The meeting of the house in east Delhi was marred by heated arguments on Monday which lead to uproar when Mayor Annapurna Mishra called an independent councillor 'mad' [Inka dimag kharab ho gaya hai]. The house was discussing de-silting of drains in east Delhi on a short notice brought by ruling BJP. Later in the day, the mayor apologised for her action.

In the middle of the debate, the councillors stood up and started shouting at each other. Bansi Lal, councillor from Geeta Colony was seen changing his seats from opposition to ruling to media gallery. The mayor warned him not to do so, which he ignored and kept switching places, causing the mayor to say 'He has lost his mental balance [

]'. This irked the opposition and they came in the well demanding apology from the mayor. They also claimed that the standing committee chairman Mahek Singh also called Bansi Lal a 'mad' one.

After the meeting, both the mayor and Singh denied the allegation. 'I don't remember uttering any non-parliamentary word, but if I did I am very sorry for that,' said Mishra. 'I am ready to apologise in the house if they demand for it,' added Mishra. However, Mahek Singh denied of saying anything derogatory and refused the demand of apology. 'Only a doctor can decide whether he is mad or not,' said Singh.

Starting the debate in house, Mahek Singh demanded the house to pass a resolution directing commissioner to write to the Delhi government regarding the shoddy work of de-silting of drains handed over to PWD. He was supported by many councillors of ruling BJP and some from the opposition benches.

'The drains and roads handed over to PWD should be reclaimed by East Delhi Municipal Corporation [EDMC]. The commissioner must write to Chief Minister of Delhi demanding her to allot the work to corporation,' said Preeti Singh of Congress. She also flayed PWD for not de-silting the drains in her area.

After that the councillors of opposition blamed EDMC for the water logging and drain clogging in their areas and pulled up the corporation for passing blamed on PWD.
