LPG drive on to curb illegal practices

Asking various gas agencies in the city to stop illegal practices, Minister of Food and Supplies and Weights and Measures Department, Haroon Yusuf, said on Thursday strong action would be taken against the defaulter agencies and bottling plants.

According to the Weights and Measures department officials, after having large number of complaints with regard to the LPG supply, the department has launched a special drive to check the LPG cylinders sold by various suppliers, including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum.

Government has conducted 455 raids at various hideouts and focal points of extraction of gas from the LPG cylinders since February 2012 and, as a result, 159 prosecutions have been launched till date.

In total, there are 279 LPG gas agencies in the capital city alone, which belong to IOC, BPCL and HPCL, catering to the LPG requirements of the consumer. These days, the department has also set up a control room to facilitate complaints from consumers.

Yusuf said, 'To stop the illegal practices with respect to LPG cylinders and protect consumer interests, several inspections and raids were conducted by the department. It organised simultaneous raids on 24 April at two bottling plants of Indian Oil Corporation, which are located at Madanpur Khaddar, Ghewra More and Tikri Kalan. More than 300 LPG cylinders of two bottling plants of Indian Oil Corporation were checked and 137 cylinders were found for variation beyond the permissible limit of 150 gm i.e. with the range of the quantum of variation of 160 gm to 1.360 kg.'

Sources in the ministry said that Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit would also communicate with Petroleum Minister regarding the LPG cylinder issue as well as to replace kerosene oil that is still in consumption with LPG cylinders.

For the last two months, the department has been seriously looking into the issue of domestic and commercial diversion of the LPG cylinders.

Meanwhile, as of 31 March, 5,326 inspections were conducted and 4,139 prosecutions were launched by the department for various violations, including short supply of LPG and violation of packaged commodity rules.

Eight FIRs have also been registered against individuals for involvement in black marketing, misuse, illegal possession and storage of LPG cylinder.

Yusuf further said that the raids would be a regular feature.
