Lovers commit suicide in police station

In an apparent case of custodial death, two persons, who were having an extra marital affair, committed suicide inside a police station where they had come to resolve the dispute with the woman’s husband. The woman, identified as Kanta Devi [32] was married to one Ravi Kumar [40]. Recently, Kanta had eloped with her lover, Rukman Singh [40].

After Kumar came to know about this, he approached the police asking them to track her. They were apprehended by the Ghaziabad police on Thursday evening.

The police officials said they brought the couple to the police station, where they consumed some poisonous substance that the woman was carrying with her. ‘All three of them are residents of Bulandsher area. On 6 May, she left her home with Rukman Singh. Acting on Ravi’s complaint, police found the lovers and apprehended them,’ said a police official.

The official added that Ravi later came to the police station. On seeing him, the eloping couple got visibly nervous. They then immediately consumed the poison. They were rushed to the nearby hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.

Shiv Shankar Yadav, SP (City), Ghaziabad, said, ‘We are treating it as a case of custodial death and four police personnel have been suspended in this regard. We are investigating the matter from all plausible angles.’

Ravi Kumar alleged that he had given Kanta many opportunities to forget Rukman and start afresh  with him. But she kept refusing. On 6 May, when he was not home, she packed her luggage and ran away with Singh.

Ravi said he even knew the place where the couple was staying. So he informed the police and the cops caught them. ‘I don’t know why she decided to end her life,’ he added.
