Love-crazed: Another JNU woman student attacked in campus

Four days after the horrifying incident of an attempt to murder-cum-suicide by an obsessive classmate, another incident was reported from the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Monday. The accused, who is also a student of JNU, has been arrested. According to the police, the incident took place on Sunday evening at around 8 pm when the girl, a first-year student of Spanish at School of Languages, was accosted by a schoolmate.

The victim was having a conversation with a few other friends outside her hostel – Shipra, when her senior, identified as Abhinendra Jain (24) approached and tried to strangle the girl. Jain hails from Gaya in Bihar and is a final-year student in the same school.
‘We were talking about upcoming movies and suddenly Jain came and tried to strangle Megha (name changed). Megha had told us earlier also that Jain was obsessed with her. He used to keep every update about her and follow her,’ the official said quoting Ritu (name changed) an eye-witness and a JNU student.

After several attempts made by the fellow students, Jain refused to let Megha go, so a call was made to the police control room. Soon after receiving the complaint, the cops contacted the college staff as they could reach the crime spot before the PCR team could reach. ‘When a team approached the crime scene, Jain had managed to escape. Woman cops present in the team took the girl to the nearby hospital and administered to her first aid. Whereas another team carried out a man-hunt on the campus to nab Jain,’ the investigating officer said.

At around 9.30 pm, Jain was apprehended from the campus. ‘We have informed his parents about the incident who are likely to come to the police station on Tuesday evening. Even the University is planning to take strict action against him,’ the official added. Jain has been booked under section-354 (molestation) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
