Lodestar of Indian dance

This screening is of the recital from the Maharaj Kalka Bindadin Kathak Mahotsava that was held in 1999 at New Delhi.

Sitara Devi, named Dhanalaxmi at birth was born in Calcutta in 1922, initiated in dance by her father. She later studied Kathak along with other dance forms including Bharatanatyam, Manipuri, Western ballet, and some folk and popular dances of India and the West.

She performed at the Atiya Begum Palace in Bombay before Rabindranath Tagore who described her as Nritya Samrajnee - empress of dance.

In the 1930s and ’40s she danced in the film industry of Bombay and later stepped out of cinema in
order to devote herself entirely to Kathak.

She was conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1969, Padma Shri in 1973 and the Kalidas Samman in 1995.

A recipient of the Ratna fellowship of the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi, she was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and elected a Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2008.
