Locals rule the roost at Shahdara

In what could be considered as sheer recklessness of the security agencies, 30 per cent of cars remain permanently parked at Shahdara Metro station parking. Neither the parking guard nor the local police have any clue about the owner of these vehicles. Even outside the parking area, many cars have been parked for the last few weeks.

There are six parking points at Shahdara Metro station that are specially meant for commuters using the train to travel. This parking area covers about 4,808 square feet of space. At one slot, about 80 cars can be parked at a time whereas about 250 two wheelers can be parked in a two-wheelers’ parking slot.

However, due to lack of space outside their houses, those who reside near Shahdara metro station often parks their vehicles here.

‘The Shahdara Metro station parking has become a hotspot for auto-lifters as well. After stealing the vehicle, auto-lifters park it in the parking and after a few days, take out the vehicle and flee. The guards assigned the duty don’t pay much attention,’ said a police official.

The official added, ‘We have recovered many stolen vehicles from the Metro station’s parking and when we question the guards, they say are not being paid to maintain records of the vehicles’ owners.’

The locals of Shahdara, reportedly, pay these guards to get some space for parking their vehicle. Most of the space is being used by these residents, which in turn creates parking problems for commuters.

‘I am a resident of Rohtash Nagar, and I have to go to Rohini every day. I go to Shahdara Metro station in car but every morning, I have to waste time in finding space to park my car. I often see that a few cars are permanently  parked in the area, because of which many commuters face problems.

Administration should look into the matter seriously, as these parkings are meant for visitors only,’ said one Lalit Sharma.
