Locals block NH-31 after police vehicle claims two lives

Residents from Malbazar area on Monday blocked the National Highway 31, demanding the release of the accused who were arrested by the police on the charge of setting a police jeep on fire after it mowed down two motorcyclists on Sunday.

A scuffle broke out between the police and the mob when the former tried to convince them to lift the block. The local residents were infuriated after the police vehicle had claimed two lives including that of a pregnant woman who was going to a nearby hospital along with her husband on motorcycle.

The husband who was killed in the accident has been identified as a jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The accident took place on Sunday. An irate mob on Sunday vandalised the police vehicle after it lost control and rammed two motorcycles and a bicycle, killing the CRPF jawan and his pregnant wife, and injuring six others in New Mal area in Jalpaiguri district. Some youth later set the jeep on fire. Police later arrested some persons for instigating violence in the area.

Local residents on Monday started the agitation with a demand to release the arrested persons. The agitation was called off after senior police officers assured the people to consider their demands.
