Laugh out loud

Laugh with an engineer - declared the event. ‘Are engineers funny?’ asked my friend who I had pulled along for the show. ‘They had better be!’ I muttered cursing the traffic on the road to India Habitat Centre. Appurv Gupta, all of 24, the very engineer in question, is not an unfamiliar name in the terrain of stand-up comedy in India. It is of course a different matter that I had never seen him in action before.

A pretty packed hall welcomed the comedy lovers from the Capital as the opening act made way for Gupta. The whole point of the show was to sit back and laugh at regular ‘engineer’ things. Like IIT exams, not clearing the aforementioned exam and then resorting to any engineering college across the country and its myriad highways. Of course next comes the MBA. The usual IIT-IIM trajectory that does not bless every wannabe except Chetan Bhagat of course! But then if Bhagat got it...

Gupta has been there and poor thing has done it, not the IIT-IIM thing, the any other college in the highway thing! And that is perhaps why he can laugh at it and let us laugh at it.

The confident 24-year-old took on the audience through a laugh-out-loud series of jokes aimed at marriages, cell phones, ipads, the irrational love for Amreeka even Mahabharata and Ramayana that we have grown up watching on Doordarshan. And of course some tongue-in-cheek dibs at 18+ matters. We absolutely approve!
